SharePoint is a great tool for fostering collaboration in a company.  Some common benefits are as follows:

  • It allows users to quickly and efficiently share and manage information.  This can be done through document libraries or user created lists
  • It can help with process management.  The program can be modified through work flows to manage regular everyday process and help ensure that all the steps are followed for a given result.
  • Allows for easy access to documents and helps with version control.
  • SharePoint can link to other database and become the portal to critical business information.

The quick answer to this is no.  It is possible through proper design and management to eliminate much of the down time the average company experiences in day to day operations.  Unfortunately many businesses do not have the proper resources on hand to design, build and maintain a stable infrastructure.  This leads to unnecessary downtime that cost the company in lost man hours and unnecessary support time.

According to an Osterman Research Survey, the average mid to large size company experiences 53 minutes of unscheduled downtime a month.    This does not include any downtime for regularly scheduled maintenance.

At Techworks, we are a product leader and have developed a formula for creating a stable network environment where unscheduled downtime is a rare occurrence.

  • Virtualization is the use of software to allow a single piece of hardware to run multiple operating systems at the same time.
  • It is a method of partitioning one physical server computer into multiple “virtual” servers, giving each the appearance and capabilities of running on its own dedicated machine. Each virtual server functions as a full-fledged server and can be independently rebooted.

Virtualization is making inroads in the main stream.  With the majority of large data centers now using the technology, it has helped mature the technology so that that it is now feasible for small to medium sized businesses.  A recent industry survey suggests that 50% – 60% of all servers are now virtualized.

Virtualization can be an important tool to help companies reduce hardware costs and improve reliability.  With careful planning many companies can replace their current server farms with a few high end servers.  Virtualization makes it possible to run several servers on one physical machine.  This can provide huge cost saving to companies

Virtualization also makes it possible to add levels of redundancy that were not possible in the past.  Virtual servers can automatically transfer to new hardware when they detect a failure on their current server.  This transition can be seamless to the users and will minimize downtime.
